The bulk of sulphuric acid production was reacted with salt in furnaces to produce sodium sulphate (saltcake). Most of this was reacted with limestone and coal in Le Blanc furnaces to produce ‘black ash’ from which soda was extracted. Increasingly, legislative regulation of pollution (in the form of the Alkali Acts), along with economic motives, led to the recovery and use of waste products, in particular hydrochloric or muriatic acid for the manufacture of bleaching powder, much of which was exported to America.
Even when powerlooms became capable of weaving a particular type of cloth, it did not necessarily mean that they quickly replaced the hand weavers. In part, this may have reflected a desire on the part of the handloom weaver to avoid factory labour, even if it meant working for a meagre wage. Equally, manufacturers may have b een willing to retain at least some handloom weavers, because they believed the costs of installing powerlooms was high, especially when compared with those arising from the continued use of handlooms.
By the 1870s, the few worsted handloom weavers remaining appear to have been of little importance. Neither contemporaries nor more recent commentators have suggested that long-term decline in the number of handloom weavers in Britain took place before the mid-1820s. Until then, mechanized cotton weaving made limited progress, in part because of the technical difficulties encountered. During the following decade, however, the powerloom spread comparatively rapidly, especially in the production of plainer and coarser grades of cotton cloth.
