During his stay there, Nicolayson made a thorough examination of the possibilities of establishing a mission in the Galilean city, and noted the stubborn objections of its residents. One of his conclusions was that activities of a medical nature would be of great assistance in capturing the hearts of the Jews.

The London Society, which was in fact established by a German national, dispatched over a period of two decades a dozen missionaries to Palestine, mostly of German origin, and including only two British nationals, who remained in Jerusalem for only a few weeks. Many obstacles stood in the path of these emissaries, preventing them from settling in Jerusalem in the 1820s.

The war reached its climax with the surrender of Acre at the beginning of November 1840, heralding the end of Egyptian rule in Palestine. On 22 August, Nicolayson had already reported to London on the hostile activities that were about to occur in the region and concerning the position taken by the mission in this matter. The British consul in Alexandria sent out warnings and advice to British residents and merchants in Egypt, recommending that they organise themselves and keep up their BRITISH MISSION TO THE JEWS 31 guard because of the serious situation.
