What is enquired into must, therefore, be something about which there might be different understandings. Furthermore, there must be some possibility of a certain outcome to the enquiry. The aim of the enquiry is certain knowledge, which constitutes a ‘conclusion’ of the enquiry, and if it would be impossible to arrive at this then conducting the enquiry is itself pointless. It is the possibility of arriving at hitherto unknown certainty that both indicates the required previous state of uncertainty, or doubt, and is one of the key validating points of undertaking the enquiry.
