Bushnell’s assertion that children could come to faith without psychological trauma assumed that they were morally pliable and, in the proper circumstances, thoroughly amenable to the good. Following in Bushnell’s path, many liberal Protestant thinkers argued that each child was endowed with an authentic religious sensibility commensurate with age and understanding. The advent of “scientific child rearing” in the early twentieth century would affirm this fundamentally optimistic view of children, even as it added a layer of mystery to the task of Christian parenting.

Indeed, the daily rituals of family life—everything from mealtime prayers to the kinds of foods served and clothing worn—could have a long-term salvific effect. Parents should take care not to “disturb the simplicity of nature” through excess proselytizing, Bushnell warned. But at the same time, they could gently and consistently make Christian faith the child’s logical option. ”19 Christian Nurture was a relatively small part of Bushnell’s theological work, which justly earned him recognition as one of the nation’s leading liberal voices.
