The photograph, taken in 1972, showed the horror of war through the image of a child. Kim Phuc was not asked for her permission, and nor did a social worker give consent’ (McIntyre 2002: 51). There are elements that do not appear in most media images of children – qualities of aggression, passion, sexuality and resistance are expunged ‘in order to secure our own sense of adulthood’ (Burman 1992: 240). It is noteworthy that images of children who are poor, sick, disabled, suffering or from the South fail to conform with the ideal image (Burman 1992). While the children pictured to represent the future of the planet – to elicit appreciation of their innocence and our culpability – are white, blond and blue-eyed (Burman 1995a), Third World children are used in a different way – yet still drawing on the global model of childhood.
