Zhao Xinxian is a powerful motivator, who was able to weld together a strong management team and provide a vision and sense of purpose to the firm. His entrepreneurial and leadership abilities (demonstrated dramatically by the subsequent growth of the firm) had been repressed under the command economy and were now given the chance to flourish. The cadres were remunerated according to the 1:18 wage scale for cadres. The greatly enhanced differentials were a key part of the ‘deal’ won by Zhao Xinxian for Nanfang.

Much of their time was spent physically involved in the construction of the plant. Their slogans were: ‘production first, life later’ and ‘hard and arduous struggle’. Zhao considers their army background helped them greatly to sustain their spirit and discipline during this tough and highly uncertain phase of building their business. During these years a close bond built up among this group, who still remained at the centre of the firm’s leading cadres in the late 1990s. These were all young people, recently graduated from university, led by Zhao, who was in early middle age when the endeavour began.

The other six major industries of Sanjiu were wine manufacturing (Western and Chinese wines, including beers), agriculture (including the manufacturing of agricultural machinery, chemical fertilizers and cultivation), tourism (including hotels), real estate (including the development of real estate, construction of infrastructure and provision of construction materials), trading (including imports and exports, franchised dealers and shops) and even automobiles (including the manufacturing of automobiles and spare parts).
