Not all adults and children were on the move in the early hours of 1 September. Mary-Rose Benton, for example, was at home in Margate, on the Kent coast. The family resided at 85 Victoria Avenue, but had earlier lived in lodgings. Mary-Rose was now 6 years old, and had been born on 20 January 1933. Her four brothers and sister, Ruby, Jack, Billy, and Jimmy, had also been born at home, within a four-year period. The children’s father, Harry, had Operation Pied Piper 49 been born in 1890, in Nottingham, and came from a family that dealt in shoes; his wife, also called Ruby, was sixteen years younger.

It had been one of the most dramatic days in the long career of Sir Maurice, now aged 54. Born on 14 June 1885, he had gone to 48 Operation Pied Piper school at Wellington College, and had later read law at Balliol College, Oxford. On entering the Inner Temple he had seemed set for a legal career, and when he had applied to the Board of Education (which had been established by the Education Act of 1902) in October 1908, it was for a temporary position as a junior examiner. He had no training or experience as a teacher, and was about to enter barrister’s chambers to gain further experience of the law.

She had just started a small practice, working from her home. Now 45 years old, Elizabeth Denby had been born on 20 May 1894, at 95 Horton Road, Bradford, the second of four daughters of a doctor, Walter Denby, and his wife Clara. Between 1906 and 1913 she had been educated privately and at Bradford Girls’ Grammar School, where she had excelled at drawing and music. Her recollections of the slums of industrial Bradford, and the contrasting pretty villages of the Yorkshire countryside, had never left her.
