No one has ever asked for evidence that there is an object concept that develops. This is not an idle question, but rather a specific instance of a problem that bedevils all of developmental psychology. The development of the object concept spans the period from birth to about 18 months. The responses used to index the level of the concept change drastically in this period; eye movements, heartrate, operant responses, overt grasping, locomotor movements, have all been used to gauge the stage of concept attainment.
